Vacancy: Postdoctoral Researcher for a Project on the Implications of the Current Refugee Influx in Germany

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Department for Socio-Cultural Diversity) wishes to appoint a researcher at the postdoctoral level to develop and undertake a new project with Institute colleagues concerning the current refugee influx and its implications in Germany. Overall, the project will contribute to our understanding of forms and consequences of the diversification of migrant and local populations by way of ethnicity and nationality, religion, age, gender and legal status. Aspects of the research project might include: responses among local and other state authorities, the nature of voluntary engagement, the range of refugee experiences, andinteractions between and among refugees and local residents.

Applicants should have a degree in sociology, anthropology, geography, political science or related fields. They need to have submitted the PhD thesis and defended by January 2016. Successful applicants’ research interests, experience and publications should be relevant to themes and topics within the Department for Socio-Cultural Diversity. Very good German and English is essential.

If you wish to apply, please send a cover letter and short description of your research ideas (1 to 3 pages) together with a CV, list of publications, final degree certificates, and the names and contact details of two referees. The closing date is 16 November 2015.

We are planning to interview selected candidates in the week of 14 December.

The position will begin on 1 February 2016 or soon thereafter. The initial contract will be for three years with an option for renewal. Salary is based on the German public service scale TVöD.

The Max-Planck-Institute offers an excellent research environment with a well-equipped library, funds for travel and fieldwork, plenty of opportunities to discuss research-related issues in an international group of colleagues andvisitors. There are no teaching obligations for staff, but teaching and other forms of co-operation with universities is possible.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the participation of women across the sciences. Applications from women are therefore particularly welcome. Following its commitment to an equal opportunities employment policy, the Max Planck Society also especially encourages disabled people to apply.
