20th IMISCOE Annual Conference

MIGRATION AND INEQUALITIES. In search of answers and solutions

Inequalities invariably intertwine with migration. On the micro-scale, socio-economic inequalities shape the propensity to migrate. On a macro-scale, South-North and East-West dynamics act as migration drivers. Recent mobility-related debates include inequalities as developmental outcomes of migration, as an implication of social and economic remittances, and as an issue to be addressed by public policies. Inequality-related challenges are also discussed in the context of gender, ethnic and racial disparities, urban segregation, or labour market segmentation in receiving countries. Inequalities intertwine with migration knowledge production. Postcolonial power relations determine who gets to define the research agenda, who receives research funding and, consequently, who gets to theorise migration knowledge.

There is a growing need for scientific and political discussion on new inequalities and challenges for the future, such as the demographic, climate and technological changes, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the mass forced migration following conflicts such as the current war in Ukraine. As an efficient public response is still lacking, research and academic debates are much needed to support political decision-making processes. The focus on inequalities of the 2023 IMISCOE Annual Conference can facilitate the strengthening of topics in IMISCOE debates, from different methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative) and various disciplinary focuses (including but not limited to economics, sociology, demography, political science, anthropology, law, history and geography).

For the 20th IMISCOE Annual Conference in Warsaw, we invite submissions of Individual Paper Proposals, Workshop Proposals and Panel Proposals that relate to the broad topic of migration and inequalities.

Individual Paper Proposals

Paper proposals should include a 250-word abstract and the name, affiliation and contact details of the author(s). Individual papers will be thematically clustered into panels. We strongly encourage authors to highlight the conceptual and methodological novelty of their contribution.

Panel Proposals

Panel proposals should include a 250-word abstract of the theme of the panel, together with min 3/max 5 thematically consistent and related 250-word paper abstracts. Submissions should also include the name, affiliation and contact details of the chair(s), discussant(s) and author(s) of each paper.

Workshop Proposals

Proposals can also be submitted for workshops. This can be, for example, book workshops, policy workshops or round tables focusing on specific topics, with the aim of discussing research or outlining future research agendas. Submissions for workshops should include a maximum of 400-word abstract as well as the names, affiliations and contact details of the organizer(s) and workshop participants (up to 10 participants, excluding the workshop chairs).

Paper, panel and workshop proposals will have to be linked to a Specific IMISCOE Standing Committee (see below) or to the Open Section (the Open Section should be used for proposals which do not have a direct thematic link with any of the Standing Committees listed below):

When submitting your Panel, Workshop, Individual Paper proposals, you will have the option of linking them to a specific IMISCOE Standing Committee or to the Open Section. Please check the description of all IMISCOE Standing Committees here and select the one more aligned to the topic of your proposal. Please note that the Open Section should be used for proposals which do not have a direct thematic link with any IMISCOE Standing Committee.

Conditions/requirements

The deadline for submitting proposals is 20 December 2022 (23:59 CET). All submissions should be made online via www.imiscoe.org (see the links above). When submitting proposals, applicants must choose their intended mode of participation: ON-SITE in Warsaw or ONLINE. Please note that the 2023 Annual Conference is not envisaged to be fully blended: panels and workshops running throughout the conference days will be expected to take place either fully on-site or fully online, with very few potential exceptions. Applicants will be informed about the acceptance of their submission towards the end of February 2023. Applicants may be the lead presenter of only one accepted paper in the conference. The conference may be fully online if the Covid-19 situation imposes it. The information regarding the conference fees will be provided on the IMISCOE website.
