Health Systems and Health Policy Research Group

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, promotes the advancement of science and health for all, through innovative research, advanced education, professional services and capacity building of partner institutions in the South. ITM has 480 staff members working in three depart-ments - Public Health, Clinical Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences, further divided into Research Groups. The Health Systems & Health Policy Research (HSHPR) Group, located in the Department of Public Health, is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral researcher for one year.


The HSHPR group aims to support the development of people-centred, integrated, accountable, equitable and resilient health systems, and to contribute to policy design and decision-making aligned with these goals. Our group brings together researchers from all over the world and from a range of disciplines including political science, sociology, anthropology, management sciences as well as medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health. We adopt a systems approach that focuses on the interfaces between people, policies, programmes, services, communities and the environ-ment. In practice, we create strong synergies between our research, education and capacity strengthening activities, co-producing, synthesizing and disseminating knowledge in academic and non-academic fora.


Current focal areas in research include chronic care, pharmaceutical systems and policies, and ur-banisation and health in a range of countries in the North as well as the South. Our health systems strengthening work focuses in particular on conflict-affected and fragile settings, as well as the gov-ernance of urban health systems.

We are currently developing and expanding a research portfolio that brings together strands of re-search on migrant health, mobility, access to medicines, and chronic care. Over the course of 2023-24, we will consolidate these thematic areas through a focused body of research, consultation, and dissemination activities.

Assignment

To this purpose, we welcome the inclusion of a post-doctoral researcher to our group who can:

  • Initiate and build, through a range of research activities, (e.g. literature reviews, stakeholder consultations, framework and tool development, secondary data analysis) a strong case for support for relevant, topical, and innovative work in the areas of migrant health, mobility, and/or chronic care
  • Lead research publications emerging from the above work
  • Contribute, as co-investigator, to development of a large-scale proposal to be submitted ear-ly 2024, with a clearly defined work package reflecting your interest and expertise
  • Facilitate a working group with partner organisations and individuals in this area including joint activities (e.g. monthly calls; seminars; proposal development workshop)
  • Participate as an active member of the research group towards the broader thematic focus on chronic care

Profile

Essential

  • Recent Ph.D. in health and/or social sciences (e.g. medical sociology, medical anthropology, health policy, political science, migration studies)
  • Excellent qualitative research skills; experience in design, data collection, and analysis of qualitative data in a a health-related or health care setting
  • Strong writing skills, demonstrated through research outputs including peer-reviewed publi-cations
  • Experience in research grant preparation and submission
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Desirable

  • Work or research experience in chronic care and/or migrant health care
  • Work or research experience in a low- and/or middle income (LMIC) setting
  • Experience in conducting systematic and scoping reviews
  • Specific experience in health systems and policy research
  • Quantitative research skills as applied to social sciences in health (survey design, sample size calculation, descriptive and inferential statistics, tool development and validation)
