Parallel to the development of structural and systemic understandings of racism (Carmichael and Hamilton, 1967), from the 1990s onwards, research, initially in English, drew increasingly attention to the complementarity and interest of an experiential approach to racism. Such interest appears to be twofold, both methodological or epistemic, and political. On the one hand, since contemporary racism is structured around implicit, latent, often labeled “subtle”(Guillaumin, 1972)forms, lived experience emerges as a privileged lens. On the other hand, insofar as racism is defined in part by the impossibility it places on minorities to re-define their identity and subjective experience, “making minority voices heard” (Poiret, 2010) implies not only a methodological and ethical commitment but also holds heuristic powers, or even the key to transformative political struggles. This special issue offers to systematize such questionings through a transdisciplinary and comparative perspective, around three objectives: 1) dialogue theoretical and empirical approaches to épreuve and experience across disciplinary fields; 2) bridge migration studies and critical race scholarship; 3) provide a critical review of both qualitative and quantitative scholarship in order to outline avenues for future research.
