Workshop scope
We invite applications to participate in a two-day workshop on “Academic migration within the EU – opportunities and constraints”. The workshop is convened by the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM), and aims to bring insights from different disciplinary, theoretical and empirical perspectives into the opportunities and constraints characterizing academic migration within the EU.
Migration is an essential part of academic life, a marker of and often pre-condition for academic success. Yet, opportunity structures for academic migration can be unevenly distributed among different social groups and geopolitical spaces, potentially reproducing social and national hierarchies and closures, and unequally distributing benefits across different social groups and geopolitical regions (Morley et al. 2018). The inclusion of mobility as a pre-condition in the regular European research infrastructure may even have negative unintended outcomes for scholars at risk (Gusejnova et al. 2024). Then there is the question of how does academic migration contribute to knowledge (re)production, and whose knowledge is actually being circulated and (re)produced? These are some of the questions that the workshop is planning to address.
Themes
We welcome paper proposals that reflect broadly on the topic of academic migration within the EU, including, but not limited to, the following topics:
• The far-right and illiberal higher educational policy as a response to migration
• Alternative approaches and actors to higher education
• Academic migration and geographies of knowledge production
• The role of policies in shaping academic migration
• Academics at risk: limits of the approach
• Missing European and transnational responses to a transnational problem
We encourage submissions from different disciplinary perspectives, and we invite both empirical and theoretical contributions.

Practical information
The organisers of this workshop are Pieter Bevelander (Malmö University and MIM), Andrea Pető (Central European University) and Magdalena Ulceluşe (Malmö University and MIM).
There is no workshop registration fee. Participants will be expected to fund their own travel and stay in Malmö.
